The Inaugural United States Winter Swimming Championships

February 21st-22nd, 2015 in Newport, Vermont

The United States Winter Swimming Association and Kingdom Games have partnered to host the Inaugural United States Winter Swimming Championships. The venue for the first ever winter swim in North America is Lake Memphremagog, Newport, Vermont. It is located in an area of northern Vermont known as The Northeast Kingdom. It is one of the most rural and quietly beautiful areas in the nation with some legendary and pristine, glacially carved lakes, working farms and forests, and grand vistas defining its landscape.

A 25-meter, two lane swimming pool, will be constructed in the “infield” of a 700-meter outdoor speed skating oval situated within 25 yards of The East Side Restaurant & Pub which will serve as our base of operations. Lake Memphremagog is expected to be around 32°F (0°C) and the likely air temperature will range from 0°F to 25°F (-18°C to -4°C).

Our goal is to make the Inaugural United States Winter Swimming Championships a fun and uniquely memorable experience for everyone. The city of Newport and its people are excited to have us. Learn about the activities, travel and accommodations in the full event brochure. Read More »

The sport of Winter Swimming is defined as “swimming in waters of 5°C/41°F or below”. We strongly recommend medical consultation with a doctor before training for or competing in a winter swim event. It is ill-advised to swim in these conditions without support and some acclimatization.

Participation in each event is subject to successful completion of a prior swim of half the distance, e.g. to swim the 100 meter Freestyle you will need to have demonstrated a successful 50 meter swim. Any swimmer is subject to a medical evaluation, primarily but not limited to blood pressure and EKG examination, and can be denied the opportunity to swim any event.
